Whitehorse! We woke up bright and early this fine Canada Day in the north to discover that all of the government funded museums in town had free admission today! When we arrived in Watson Lake, the visitor centre gave us Explorer’s Passports (see certain sights and get stamps, collect enough stamps and you can enter to win a few ounces of Yukon Gold – real gold, not beer.). This was good news as the Whitehorse sights on the passport are mostly museums.
Sites/Sights seen: The Old Log Church, the outside of the Yukon Arts Centre and Public Art Gallery – imagine taking Canada day off?!?!, the Yukon Transportation Museum, the Yukon Beringa Interpretive Centre – home of the GIANT beaver and Ground Squirrel(you know the ones that hibernate during winter and occasionally shiver to avoid permanent brain damage), the Copperbelt Railway and Mining Musuem (the train ride was the highlight of the trip for Fiona), the SS Klondike Historic Site, and who can forget the Macbride Museum of Yukon History? You know the only place in town not funded by the government and was charging for entrance… also home of the kinda creepy boy behind the desk who had a huge stalker crush on Fiona, ya that place!
All in all Whitehorse is a pretty cool little town. The Canada Day celebrations had a really great feel of community spirit and I’m pretty sure that my phone will be ringing very soon to tell me that we have won the annual Rubber Duck Race down the Yukon River. Our duck was wicked fast!
We’ve checked in to the Historic House B and B aka the former home of Sam McGee, well sort of. We are in a house next to it for a night because all of the regular rooms were booked. We’ve got the entire place, including laundry, to ourselves save of course the new tenant moving his stuff in for when he takes possession tomorrow… interesting. It’s not raining and it’s not camping in the rain so who cares!
To end the night and this scattered blog update, we took in the local Vaudeville Theatre. Good times. The Frantic Follies show was pretty funny! Good cheesy laughs and high kicking cancan girls. Off to the desert tomorrow!
